Designer Profile: Holly Hollenbeck of HSH-Interiors

San Francisco Chronicle - May 22, 2018 - 9:56am
To Holly Hollenbeck, all design is relational. Objects in a room — from wall treatments to furniture, lighting to window types — must complement one another and provide context to the home itself. A room’s design not only reflects the inhabitant’s tastes, it sets the tone for how one will live and function in a given space. Hollenbeck, who holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from UCLA and studied interior design at the University of California Berkeley Extension, started HSH Interiors in 2002. Before that she worked in the financial sector as a recruiter for an investment bank.

The decadent residence represents a collaboration between Jeff Schlarb Design Studio and Sutro Architects, who remodeled and expanded the five-level home on Greenwich Street. To Schlarb, the highlight of the home takes the form of a sky lounge on the top level that frames views of the bay, Alcatraz and the Presidio. “With that view, you feel like part of the harbor,” Schlarb said. “You’re seeing boats slice through the marina and Alcatraz. It’s a honed in, specific shot of the bay that’s colorful and beautiful.
