Per www.dalycityhistory.org, Daly City is named after John Daly who, in 1868 acquired 250 acres of land to own and operate the San Mateo Dairy. Immediately after the 1906 earthquake, John Daly opened up his land to provide temporary shelter for many San Franciscans fleeing the devastation in San Francisco. By 1907, John Daly began subdividing his land because he recognized the land was better used to house people rather than to operate a dairy. By 1911 the city of Daly City was officially born.
John Daly lived until 1923. His namesake city was sparsely populated until after World War II, when returning soldiers created a large need for housing and much of the land between Top of the Hill and the Pacific Ocean became housing developments such as Westlake. Now, Daly City is the most populated city in all of San Mateo county.
